Millions of people are literally walking time bombs because they have uncontrolled high blood pressure. If they leave it untreated, they will face serious and potentially life-threatening health consequences in the future. The trouble is, the effects of high blood pressure sneak up on most people because they don’t even know they have it! That’s why this disease is why it’s often called “The Silent Killer”.
According to the statistics, 1 out of every 4 US adults has high blood pressure. Yes, that means if you’re an adult, there’s a 25% chance you already have it. And if you are overweight, there is more than a 50% chance you have high blood pressure! Having high blood pressure leads to an increased risk of stroke, heart attack, heart failure, and kidney failure.
I’m not telling you this to scare the living daylights out of you…just to make you aware of the facts. This epidemic of high blood pressure is sad and unfortunate because high blood pressure is treatable.
A lot of companies and authors try to get me to promote their high blood pressure treatments to my website visitors and subscribers. It runs the gamut from drugs, to herbs, pills foods, books, stress reduction programs, hypnosis and everything else under the sun.
Most of what lands on my desk is pure junk and I immediately chuck it into the trash. Every now and then, however, I run across something that rivets my attention because it really does have the potential to help you reduce your blood pressure.
One of those resources is a book I recently read called, “The Blood Pressure Miracle” by Frank Mangano.
The program Frank developed and explains in his book is a unique, all-natural system for dropping your blood pressure that is not based on a single approach such as stress reduction, or herbs or special foods or exercise. It’s actually a combination of every method that has ever been scientifically proven to work, complied into one comprehensive lifestyle program. No doubt that’s why the program has been so successful for so many people.
Frank has a knack for simplifying complex medical concepts in a way that the regular person can understand and apply in his or her life when reading the book. In fact, probably the best part of the program is the 60-day plan that’s included in the appendix. It makes the whole program a no brainer to make a part of your daily life because Frank gives you a single change you can make to your daily routine, one day at a time. If you change the little things one at a time, they all add up and the results over the weeks and months can be astonishing.
After reading Frank’s book – which is now available as an instant download e-book – I can give it my highest recommendation. Frank also offers an unconditional, risk-free 60-day guarantee, which is very generous and shows that he has faith that his 60 day plan will lower your blood pressure or else you get your money back, it’s as simple as that.
If you think there is even a remote chance that you might have high blood pressure – and especially if you are overweight – please get it checked. Left un-treated, high blood pressure is a life or death matter.
If you’ve already been diagnosed with high blood pressure, then it’s urgent to take steps to lower it immediately. Your doctor may have immediately recommended that you go on medication. I recommend that you follow the advice of your physician to a T.
However, if you do not like the idea of staying on drugs for the rest of your life (which are very expensive and have many potential side effects), then I strongly urge to you to do some research on your own about all the natural alternatives to pharmaceuticals.
You would be surprised at how many options you have: Simple lifestyle changes, inexpensive natural supplements and even regular foods you can buy at your local grocery store have all been proven to improve heart health and reduce blood pressure. When you combine these strategies all together as in Frank’s 60-day system, the results are multiplied (and it probably explains why, if you tried a single natural remedy in the past, it did very little or nothing at all)
And did you know that many of these natural methods can also help you lose weight too?
Frank Mangano’s e-book, “The Blood Pressure Miracle” is an ideal place to begin your natural health research, and when you consider that a one year supply of Calcium Channel Blockers costs between $740 to $990 and frank’s program only costs $29.95, then I think you can see that you owe it to yourself to become as educated as possible about all your options.

Aventrol For Congestive Heart Failure
January 19, 2009
Addressing the underlying nutritional deficiencies that may be adversely impacting the heart remains critical for all CHF patients.
CHF affects nearly 5 million Americans, with over 1 million new cases diagnosed annually.
Realizing that condition management is the ultimate goal for those suffering from this condition, Progressive Health is here to help.
Your doctor will, in all likelihood, ask you to make necessary changes to your diet, exercise program, and lifestyle.
Progressive Health has designed Aventrol to support your new dietary modifications, giving you the right blend of nutrients to give you the highest possible quality of life.
Understanding Heart Failure, or CHF, requires an understanding of how the heart works.
The heart is a muscle that acts like a pump.
There are four chambers and each beats in an organized fashion.
In between each beat, these four chambers fill with blood.
The next beat results in this blood being pumped out of the chambers of the heart, subsequently being pushed throughout the entire body.
CHF occurs when an individual has a problem with either the electrical system, or with a synchronization within the main pumping chamber, also known as bundle branch block (BBB).
When electrical impulse to the heart’s ventricles is blocked or slowed down, the main pumping chambers become out of sync.
Just like other organs or limbs of the body, when the heart looses its coordination, it too will not function at maximum capacity.
However, the heart is our main supply of fresh, oxygenated blood.
When this supply is inadequate, the heart gets weaker.
The heart muscles become larger, the situation becomes worse, and Congestive Heart Failure often results – the heart becomes incapable of pumping oxygen to other vital organs of the body.
If you haven’t yet been diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure, it’s important to meet with your primary care physician to determine the severity of your illness and to see what can be done about your illness.
As far as CHF is concerned, a combination of symptoms usually indicates a serious need for proper treatment and specific behavioral and lifestyle changes.
The main cause for heart failure results from added stress being placed upon the heart from underlying health conditions and/or behavioral practices.
These conditions and lifestyle choices all hinder proper heart function by making it work too hard.
Causes can range from people being born with structural heart defects and viral invaders which damage heart muscle, to the well known risk factors and personal behaviors that are associated with either heart disease or heart attack.
As with all conditions of the body, an improvement of symptoms is the goal of primary treatment.
However, with CHF treatment, there is a stark contrast.
Unlike other severe medical conditions, success of treatment is often dependent upon the willingness of the patient, rather than the methods used by the attending physician.
Lifestyle Change: Alleviating symptoms via lifestyle change is critical to anyone suffering from this condition. Taking action to modify certain physical and behavioral factors can slow the disease’s progression and make life more enjoyable for the patient.
Medication: Heart Failure patients are often prescribed many medications that improve circulation.
Surgery: Surgery is considered the final treatment option for CHF. Surgical procedures for easing the symptoms associated with Heart Failure include coronary artery bypass surgery or implantation of a CRT pacemaker (Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy or biventricular pacing).
Having CHF means that the heart is more susceptible to illness, including pneumonia and flu. Thus, natural therapies and exercise are critical for maintaining the health of all CHF patients.
Useful for promoting growth and development, reproduction, and well-being. Instrumental in the metabolism of fatty and amino acids.
Key factors in helping to metabolize homocysteine.
May reduce atherosclerotic plaque while also increasing HDL cholesterol levels (the good cholesterol).
May support cardiovascular and circulatory health.
A study that combined Vitamin B12, B6, and Folic Acid showed that this combination can lower rates of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and angioplasty.
This botanical has been shown to stimulate circulation and promote the relaxation of blood vessels.
These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Adminisration.

Natural Cures for High Blood Pressure
January 18, 2009
According to the American Heart Association, nearly one in three adults in the United States has high blood pressure. But nearly one-third of those people don’t know they have high blood pressure, because it’s a silent disease. People can have high blood pressure for years without experiencing symptoms or knowing they have it.
Normal blood pressure is below 120/80 mmHg.
Prehypertension is systolic pressure that’s between 120 to 139 or diastolic pressure between 80 and 89.
Stage 1 hypertension is systolic pressure between 140 to 159 or diastolic pressure between 90 and 99.
Stage 2 hypertension is systolic pressure higher than 160 or diastolic pressure of 100 or higher.
Weight. The greater your body mass, the more pressure there is on your artery walls. That’s because more blood is produced to supply oxygen and nutrients to tissues in your body.
Activity level. Lack of physical activity tends to increase heart rate, which forces your heart to work harder with each contraction.
Tobacco use. Chemicals in cigarettes and tobacco can damage artery walls.
Sodium intake. Excessive sodium in the diet can result in fluid retention and high blood pressure, especially in people sensitive to sodium.
Potassium intake. Low potassium can result in elevated sodium in cells, because the two balance one another.
Stress. Stress can raise blood pressure.
Alcohol consumption. Excessive alcohol intake can, over time, increase the risk of heart disease.
Age. The risk of high blood pressure increases as you get older.
Family history. high blood pressure often runs in families.
high blood pressure can also be caused by an underlying condition, such as kidney disease, hormonal disorders, thyroid disease, adrenal gland disease, and the use of certain drugs, such as oral contraceptives, or herbs such as licorice. This type of high blood pressure is called secondary hypertension.
Lifestyle changes and natural remedies may help to control high blood pressure, but your doctor may also recommend medication to lower high blood pressure. It is important to work with your doctor, because untreated high blood pressure may damage organs in the body and increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, brain hemorrhage, kidney disease, and vision loss. See a drawing of a hypertensive heart.
There is some evidence that the supplement CoQ10 may help to reduce high blood pressure.
A 12 week double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 83 people with systolic hypertension examined the effect of CoQ10 supplements (60 mg twice daily). After the 12 weeks, there was a mean reduction in systolic blood pressure of 17.8 mm Hg in the Coq10-treated group.
Another study conducted at the University of Western Australia looked at the effect of CoQ10 on blood pressure and glycemic control in 74 people with type 2 diabetes. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either 100mg CoQ10 twice daily, 200mg of the drug fenfibrate, both, or neither for 12 weeks.
CoQ10 significantly reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure(mean reduction 6[.]1 mm Hg and 2[.]9 mm Hg respectively). There was also a reduction in HbA1C, a marker for long-term glycemic control.
To learn more about CoQ10, read the Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) fact sheet.
In a meta-analysis of seven randomized controlled trials of garlic supplements, three trials showed a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure and four in diastolic blood pressure. Researchers concluded that garlic powder supplement may be of clinical use in patients with mild high blood pressure.
Garlic supplements should only be used under the supervision of a qualified health practitioner. Garlic can thin the blood (reduce the ability of blood to clot) similar to aspirin. Garlic may interact with many drugs and supplements such as the
prescription "blood-thinners" drugs such as Coumadin (warfarin) or Trental (pentoxifylline), aspirin, vitamin E, gingko. It is usually recommended that people taking garlic stop in the weeks before and after any type of surgery.
To learn more about garlic, go to the articles about garlic.
The herb hawthorn is often used by traditional herbal practitioners for high blood pressure.
In a randomized controlled trial conducted by researchers in Reading, UK, 79 patients with type 2 diabetes were randomized to receive either 1200 mg of hawthorn extract a day or placebo for 16 weeks. Medication for high blood pressure was used by 71% of the patients.
At the end of the 16 weeks, patients taking the hawthorn supplement had a significant reduction in mean diastolic blood pressure (2.6 mm Hg). No herb-drug interactions were reported.
Folate is a B vitamin necessary for formation of red blood cells. It may help to lower high blood pressure in some people, possibly by reducing elevated homocysteine levels.
One small study of 24 cigarette smokers found that four weeks of folic acid
supplementation significantly lowered blood pressure. Learn more about folic acid.

High Blood Pressure And Its Treatment
January 8, 2009
High Blood Pressure And Its Treatment
If the pressure at which the blood flows through your arteries is more than normal then it is called high blood pressure.
Normally the blood pressure is 120/80. Systolic blood pressure is the higher value 120. This is the pressure at which the blood is pumped by the heart. The diastolic blood is 80. This is the pressure when the heart relaxes. If the blood pressure is 140/90 or more, then you are said to have hypertension or high blood pressure
Compact blood pressure monitoring equipment is available. It consists of a cuff, which is tied round your hand. You have to inflate the cuff with air by squeezing a bulb. Electronic blood pressure monitors automatically inflate the cuff. The instrument gives two readings which show the diastolic and systolic blood pressures.
Your blood vessels might be damaged by high blood pressure. This in turn may damage your heart and kidney. High blood pressure may also cause heart attack or stroke.
Treatment to high blood pressure starts with a change in life style.
Stop smoking and the use of any tobacco product.
Regular exercise is an absolute must.
Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits. Avoid eating saturated fats.
Cut down the intake of salt and alcohol.
Relaxation techniques such as meditation would be of great help.
Consumption of alcohol might increase blood pressure in some people. If this is the reason you should avoid alcohol. Stress is also said to affect blood pressure. You have to find out methods to relax in consultation with your doctor.
Various types of drugs are prescribed for hypertension. They include diuretics, alpha blockers and beta blocker. Certain other varieties of drugs include calcium channel blockers and ACE inhibitors.
There are also various other treatments for hypertension
Some natural remedies for hypertension are
Eating papaya every day on empty stomach
Eating garlic cloves.
Taking honey
Take Amla or Indian gooseberry every day

Natural Remedies For High Blood Pressure: Do They Really Work?
January 8, 2009
Natural Remedies For High Blood Pressure: Do They Really Work?
Even though high blood pressure remedies are on the market a lot today, there are many natural remedies that can help you lower your blood pressure. One of the first things you need to do is to go get a physical and figure out why your blood pressure is high. If something relatively simple is causing it, such as diet, then you should be able to lower and maintain it at a healthy level quite easily.
One of the best ways to keep your blood pressure level at a healthy level is to get enough exercise. Exercise is important to blood pressure control because it helps optimize circulation in your body. Exercise helps your heart pump hard, which is good cardiovascular exercise. It also increases the volume of blood flow through your vascular system. Exercise improves blood pressure levels because it improves circulation. With high blood pressure, you need to begin to exercise if your doctor says it’s healthy to do so. Of course, he or she may also at least temporarily prescribe medication to help you control your blood pressure was under control. You should always do an exercise program that has been approved by your physician, so that you don’t do something that could harm you.
Of course, diet is also key. Eating right naturally helps lower blood pressure levels by reducing salt and increasing potassium levels. Stay away from or at least greatly minimize high sodium foods, high fat foods, and alcohol. If you consume these things in great quantities, you could be contributing to your high blood pressure, if not causing it outright.
If you are looking for healthy supplements to add to your diet to maintain lower levels then you can consider things like Coenzyme, garlic, hawthorn, and fish oil. Coenzyme has proven to be effective in reducing systolic blood pressure levels. People with high blood pressure who have type 2 level of diabetes also can benefit from taking Coenzyme.
Garlic is another way to improve the systolic blood pressure levels. It is recommended that people reduce or stop taking garlic supplements if they are anticipating a surgery and they should not consume garlic after a surgery. However, garlic can greatly reduce blood pressure levels. It can interact with certain medications and should be carefully considered when taking things like Coumadin or Trental.
Herbal supplements, too, can help lower your blood pressure. Hawthorn is one of these. It greatly reduces diastolic where pressure levels, and there are no purported drug interactions thus far with hawthorn.
Fish oil is one of the best things you can take as a supplement if you have high blood pressure. The best way to get DHA is through oils from fish. You should consider eating a lot of fish but if you don’t like fish then you should take a fish oil supplement. You will notice an excellent reduction in your blood pressure levels.
In addition to medication, there are natural, healthy ways to reduce your blood pressure. These include changing your diet to include more potassium and less salt, exercising regularly, and taking supplements such as those mentioned in these articles as recommended by healthcare professionals. Exercise especially is beneficial because it helps improve circulation, and of course it should be done under the guidance of your physician. It may mean that you won’t have to take medications "forever," but may simply need to take them for a short period of time as recommended by your doctor until your blood pressures under control; perhaps you can even avoid taking them altogether. Cholesterol, too, is of great impact when it comes to blood pressure. If your cholesterol is high, it may be beneficial to avoid taking cholesterol-lowering medications and focus on diet and exercise, as well as other lifestyle changes, instead. Again, this is something that should be done under the supervision of your doctor.

High Blood Pressure – Natural Solutions
January 6, 2009
High Blood Pressure – Natural Solutions
Some of the Causes of High Blood Pressure
Before analyzing some of the effective solutions for high blood pressure, we must first look at some of the possible causes of this problem. According to modern medicine some of the basic causes of high blood pressure are:
1. MALFUNCTIONING OF THE KIDNEYS may in various ways disturb the proper balance of water in the body. The kidneys determine the electrolyte balance in the liquids of the body, and thus will affect how much water will be retained in the body and how much will be expelled from the body. If the kidneys have heredity weaknesses, or are tired, or imbalanced because of life factors, then too much liquid may accumulate in the body increasing the blood pressure. One factor may be inefficient salt excretion. On the other hand, the kidneys may simply be very tired and overworked because of a heavily toxic diet with large overdoses of SODIUM. A direct relationship between the intake of high sodium foods and high blood pressure has been established.
It seems also that the kidney is responsible for producing various chemical substances, which in a certain way control the blood pressure and the tension of the walls of the arteries and veins in the circulatory system. Well-functioning kidneys are essential for control of proper blood pressure.
2. MALFUNCTIONING OF THE ADRENAL GLANDS may also be the root cause of disturbances in the blood pressure. Disturbances in the pituitary gland and hypothalamus can affect the functioning of the adrenals in a negative way, creating high or low blood pressure. In general, any malfunctioning of the endocrine system may result in blood pressure problems. It is also likely that this disharmony in the endocrine system may in turn be the result of emotional or mental stress, or unhealthy living habits.
3. THE NERVOUS SYSTEM may give messages of contraction to the arteries and veins causing the pressure to rise as the volume of the circulatory system is decreased. The reasons why the nervous system may do this may be different in each person, but in most cases they are psychosomatic.
4. OUR DIET affects our blood pressure. It is logical to believe that the substances of which the blood is constituted will affect the amount of liquid held in the blood and the tension of the walls of the blood vessels. This is especially true in cases where toxic waste products tend to accumulate on the walls of the blood vessels, destroying their flexibility and narrowing the opening and thus the volume of the vessels. The pressure in these vessels increases.
5. OUR ENVIRONMENT creates various stress conditions, which may force our bodies to react with a rise in blood pressure. The pressures we feel at work, at home, in the society are transferred through the endocrine and nervous system into a tension and pressure within our body.
6. OUR WAY OF REACTING TO LIFE will play perhaps the most important part of all. An individual who feels secure, relaxed and self-confident in the face of responsibilities and stressful situations will obviously be able to maintain a normal healthy condition, independent of the external pressures. It has been shown in thousands of cases of people who had high blood pressure that when they learned how to relax they were able to keep the problem under control often without the use of medical drugs.
7. There are OTHER CAUSES, which we have not mentioned here.
SOME NATURAL SOLUTIONS
Now let us examine some possible measures we can take in order to overcome the problem of high blood pressure. Those with serious health problems would do well to consult their doctors before employing any of the following.
1. Purification of the Blood Stream. If the problem of high blood pressure seems to be accentuated by a toxic condition in the body and the blood stream, then we can improve the situation by cleaning up the inner part of the body. This inner cleansing can be made in the following way:
a. Avoid salt, animal proteins, animal fats, cheese, butter and all canned vegetables or any substances which have sodium salts added as preservatives or for taste.
b. Avoid all stimulants such as black tea, coffee, cigarettes, alcohol, salt, mustard, black and white pepper, ginger, nutmeg and other spices.
c. Eat plenty of high potassium foods such as fruits, vegetables, grains and beans. Especially green leafy vegetables.
d. Occasional juice and vegetable broth fasts under the guidance of a doctor will help to change the blood chemistry; detoxify the kidneys, blood vessels and other organs and restore a natural healthy condition in the body.
e. The use of garlic and onions can tend to open up and clean the arteries. One may take them in fresh form or in capsules. Some naturopathic doctors also suggest lecithin and vitamin C for helping to restore healthy blood vessels.
f. Eating only watermelon for one week during the summer when it is in season can help purify and rejuvenate the kidneys.
2. The Restoration of the Proper Functioning of the Kidneys and Adrenal Glands.
We may stimulate the kidneys and adrenal glands into more harmonious functioning in some of the following ways:
a. Various physical exercises which tonify these organs. These can be learned from a well-trained Yoga teacher.
b. Through Reflexology Massage on the points corresponding to the kidneys and adrenal glands on the soles of the feet we can effectively rejuvenate and harmonize these glands.
3. Regular Relaxation of the Nervous System Through Various Techniques.
We can relax and strengthen the nervous system so that it is more resistant to stress and effort in our daily life in the following ways:
a. Deep relaxation techniques in which we can learn to consciously relax the muscles and nerves and thus the walls of the blood vessels. While in this deeply relaxed state, we can imagine light and healing energy flowing into the heart, adrenals, kidneys and head area.
b. Exercises and breathing techniques can be used on a regular basis to release muscular and emotional tension from the body and mind.
c. Certain phonetic vibrations such as OOOO and MMMM have a calming and balancing effect on the body and mind.
d. Regular meditation has proven to be extremely effective in overcoming high blood pressure.
Details about the above-mentioned techniques can be learned from competent yoga teachers.
4. Change of Attitude Towards Life
Our attitudes towards life; our attachments, aversions, fears and ways of reacting to life can create a great deal of unnecessary tension in our lives. When the cause of high blood pressure is psychosomatic, it is obviously necessary to analyze and overcome these emotional factors which are contributing to the problem. Otherwise a total control of the situation will be impossible even if we perfectly employ the other physically oriented methods.
We can begin to analyze the factors in our lives, which are causing us to react with stress or worry and gradually become freer from these ways of reacting. We would do well to approach life in a more relaxed way, with self-confidence and peace of mind. We can gradually work towards this state of mind through working with various systems of self-analysis and self-transformation, which are available today.

3 Alternative Medicine High Blood Pressure Relief Options
January 6, 2009
3 Alternative Medicine High Blood Pressure Relief Options
According to information provided by the American Heart Association around 1 in 3 of all Americans are today suffering from high blood pressure. Of this figure approximately 1/3 of these people do not actually know that they are suffering from this particular disease. However, for those that are there has been a move by more people to search for an alternative medicine high blood pressure relief options, rather than relying solely on prescribed medications.
This move to alternative medicine seems to be part of a wider movement for people to understand and take more control over their own health. Allowing people a better chance of preventing illness.
However, it is important to remember that many alternative options have not been through the same thorough testing that pharmaceutical drugs have to go through by law, and so some of the claims have be looked at closely.
Also, it is never wise to start taking an alternative medicine without first consulting your doctor to ensure that there will be no interactions with other medication you may be taking, and that the alternative is appropriate for you.
There has been research carried out on a number of alternative natural products that have shown promise in relieving high blood pressure, including garlic and ginseng, but this article will look at some other alternatives:
1. Fish Oil
There have been a number of studies carried out that point to the benefit of fish oils reducing high blood pressure. Research carried out in Western Australia found that a weight-loss diet combined with daily fish consumption is highly effective at lowering blood pressure, triglyceride and increasing good cholesterol.
Also, a study carried out at Harvard found that supplementation with fish oils each day will reduce blood pressure in hypertensive individuals. The most improvements where identified in individuals with atherosclerosis or raised cholesterol levels.
The fish oil effect on hypertension seems to be related to the dose used, and whether a person has hypertension or raised cholesterol.
2. Folic Acid
Folate is found in the Vitamin B group and is vital for our bodies to form red blood cells. This particular acid may be beneficial in helping people to lower high blood pressure.
According to a researchers at a conference on high blood pressure in the US, young women who consumed more than 800 mgs of folate per day reduce their chance of suffering with high blood pressure by nearly a third, when compared to women who took less than 200 ug/day.
3. Hawthorn
Traditional herbal practitioners regularly use this particular type of alternative for high blood pressure treatment.
A randomized controlled trial was carried out in the UK on people suffering from Type 2 Diabetes. During the trial some of the people were given 1200mg of hawthorn extract each day whilst the others only received a sugar pill (placebo) instead for 16 weeks. At the end of the 16-week trial it was found that high blood pressure levels were reduced in those who were taking the hawthorn extract.
It is important that you should discuss any alternative treatment you are considering taking with your doctor.

Reasons For High Blood Pressure – Get The Truth
January 4, 2009
Reasons For High Blood Pressure – Get The Truth
Hypertension is not uncommon amongst Americans and it is the preliminary to the leading cause of death in the United States, heart failure. For this reason alone, it is important to identify the reasons for high blood pressure. Many people live with the condition for years unaware of the risk and that they may have developed the disease already. Bottom line, treating hypertension is extremely critical. Improper treatment equals life-threatening results.
There are several reasons that hypertension attacks some 50 million Americans every day. As only one- third of them actually take control of it, the people must understand the risks for developing the condition and change the way they live. One reason that Americans suffer from high blood pressure is that it is hereditary.
Most evidence suggests that 30 to 60 percent of all cases of high blood pressure are related to family inheritance. If family members, such as parents, siblings or grandparents suffer with the disease, then your chances of developing it is high. Ironically, having a brother or sister with coronary artery disease increases the risk more so than a parent with high blood pressure.
Inheritance of hypertension is basically built on genetics. Furthermore, medical experts suggest that families often share the same lifestyles habits; eating, exercise and body weight, therefore increasing high blood pressure heirloom intensity.
Another factor that is significant in regards to high blood pressure is the racial element. In most countries, the racial factor plays a major role in the risk for developing hypertension. Within the United States, statistics reveal that the Caucasians’ risk for developing high blood pressure is about 25 percent.
The Native Americans risk for hypertension is slightly higher and the Hispanic population is slightly lower. However, the African- American population risk is significantly higher. At an amazing 36percent, African- Americans not only develop the condition, they generally develop it at an early age.
Due to the unhealthy lifestyle that many African-Americans’ sustain, their blood pressure is often more severe and progresses rapidly. Research indicates that high blood pressure accounts for 20percent of all premature deaths amongst African- Americans. This is twice the number of Caucasians that are affected.
Mental tension is also a significant contributor to high blood pressure. Mental tension can involve stress, worries, fear, work pressure or simply a competitive life. Also referred to as ‘Type A’ personality, the tension stimulates the secretion of undesirable juices within the body. In return, the arteriolar resistance is increased, which immediately causes high blood pressure.
Coincidently, medical experts have stated that mental tension is related to the high percentage of African- Americans with high blood pressure. African- Americans’ are victims of environmental and socioeconomic stressors which potentially causes that population to have the highest rating of hypertension in the world.
It is important to treat this condition aggressively. The reasons for high blood pressure should now be undeniably clear. It is not safe to ignore the risks and signs of the condition; it will not go away. Become active in regards to improving your lifestyle in order to decrease your chances of developing hypertension.

High Blood Pressure A Silent Killer
January 2, 2009
High Blood Pressure – A Silent Killer
High blood pressure, or hypertension, is often characterized as the silent killer-and for good reason. Although it affects an estimated one in five North Americans, many people don’t experience any symptoms. As a result, less than one-quarter of sufferers actually receive treatment. Left untreated, however, it can severely damage the cardiovascular system, leading to death from stroke, heart attack or kidney failure.
Most high blood pressure patients are candidates for medications, including ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers and diuretics. However, statistics show that of the 20 to 30 million individuals diagnosed with high blood pressure, less than half stay on their medication for more than one year. Moreover, 60 per cent of those who lower their medication do so because of side-effects. Given this information, the use of nutritional and botanical supplements, along with the adoption of a healthier lifestyle, can be of immense benefit in fighting this hidden killer.
Lifestyle and Dietary Approaches
If you wish to either prevent or treat high blood pressure, changing how you eat, sleep, and respond to stress are very important considerations. In the eight-week DASH trial conducted by the Heart, Lung and Blood Institute in 1997, 70 percent of volunteers who eliminated meat and sugar, decreased unhealthy fat intake, and increased fruit and vegetable consumption decreased blood pressure to below 140/90 mm/Hg compared to just 45 percent of those who only ate more fruits and vegetables.
Individuals with high blood pressure should decrease sodium intake to approximately three grams per day and add at least four daily servings of foods rich in potassium (beans, spinach, melon, potatoes, tomatoes, bananas, avocados). Decreasing sodium intake alone has reduced blood pressure by 8.4 mm/Hg systolic and 4.4 mm/Hg diastolic. Moreover, alcohol intake should be reduced to less than two drinks per day. Research has shown that a shift from five to two drinks daily can decrease blood pressure by 8 mm/Hg systolic and 4.4 mm/Hg diastolic.
A structured exercise program is another important factor. In one study, an average weight reduction of 4.5 kg by individuals who were 10 to 65 per cent overweight led to a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure after just six months. In addition, stopping smoking is a must for anyone diagnosed with hypertension.
Stress Management and Sleep
Those with high blood pressure need to employ stress management and relaxation techniques. This concept was investigated by Dr. D. Shapiro and associates from the department of psychiatry and bio behavioural sciences at the University Of California Los Angeles School Of Medicine. Individuals with a mild to moderate increase in blood pressure were given blood pressure-lowering medications and then divided at random into two groups. One group performed simple stress management techniques, while the other did not. Remarkably, 55 percent of those who employed stress-reducing strategies were able to remain medication free, compared to only 30 percent in the control group, as found after a one-year follow-up examination.
A good night’s sleep is also important. Researchers from the University of Pavia in Italy found that high blood pressure patients deprived of sleep had significant increases in blood pressures and heart rates, especially during the evening.
CoQ10, Magnesium and Fish Oil
Several supplements have proven to be of great value in the fight against hypertension. One is coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), or ubiquinone. One study of 18 patients with high blood pressure concluded that 100 milligrams of CoQ10 daily for 10 weeks lowered systolic and diastolic blood pressure by 10.6 and 7.7 mm/Hg respectively.
In addition to CoQ10, 480 mg of magnesium oxide daily for two months decreased blood pressure on average by 2.5 mm/Hg systolic and 1.4 mm/Hg diastolic over 24 hours in individuals with mild to moderate hypertension. (Those employing magnesium therapy are cautioned that this may lead to episodes of diarrhea.)
Fish oils rich in the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are also helpful adjuncts in the control of blood pressure. Individuals with mild increases in blood pressure were given either two grams of EPA and 1.4 g of DHA from fish oil (approximately 12 1,000-mg capsules of an 18 percent EPA/12 percent DHA mixture) or a placebo every day for four months. After only eight weeks, blood pressure was reduced by 6 mm/Hg systolic and 5 mm/Hg diastolic. Individuals wishing to try this high-dose fish oil approach should also increase vitamin E intake to 800 IU per day.
Garlic and Reishi Mushroom
For those with mild to moderate elevations in blood pressure, garlic and reishi mushroom may be of value. The use of standardized garlic (Allium sativum) supplements at a dose of up to 900 mg per day for 12 to 16 weeks decreases both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in individuals with moderate elevations in blood pressure. In fact, one study concluded that garlic supplements decreased standing diastolic pressure from 101 to 90 mm/Hg and systolic pressure from 171 to 150 mm/Hg after 12 weeks.
Unlike garlic, the use of reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum or Ling zhi in Chinese) in the treatment of hypertension is not well recognized. However, the conclusions of a recent trial suggest that it may be another helpful, natural, blood pressure-lowering agent. Fifty-five individuals on anti-hypertensive medications with moderate increases in blood pressure were given either 55 mg of concentrated reishi mushroom extract or a placebo, three times a day for one month. Unlike the 14 individuals in the placebo group, those taking the concentrated mushroom extract had a significant reduction in blood pressure.
In conclusion, high blood pressure is a serious problem that affects one in four adults. It is important that individuals afflicted with this problem adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes quitting smoking, reducing stress, eating better, losing weight and increasing exercise. These changes, along with the judicious use of supplements and herbal therapies, can help combat this silent killer.

What is Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure is simply the pressure of blood against the walls of the main arteries. Two readings, systolic (when the heart is contracting) and diastolic (when the heart is relaxing), are measured by a device that records pressure changes in millimetres of mercury (mm/Hg). Various factors-age, stress, diet, exercise-will affect the readings. The following chart shows a continuum of blood pressure values including both healthy and unhealthy states.
Blood pressureSystolicDiastolic
IdealLess than 120 mm/Hg Less than 80 mm/Hg
Mild hypertension140 to 159 mm/Hg90 to 99 mm/Hg
Moderate hypertension 160 to 179 mm/Hg100 to 109 mm/Hg
